THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR

The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of my favorite books growing up. I was interested in illustrating the different foods that the caterpillar eats throughout the book.  A belt was a perfect form to easily dictate the story in a linear order. I used seed beads in a painterly way, arranging them by color and differentiating the shapes and sizes to add texture. The fruits along, with he caterpillar and butterfly are sewn onto denim fabric which was chosen to act as a rustic and familiar material, while the found woven belt acts as basket or branch-like structure representing the caterpillars environment.
